It's been a while since I've blogged, and I have a ton of ideas in my head, just not enough time. I'm glad that I focus this month on the things I am thankful for. Not the obvious; my God, Eric, the kids, but the small things that I tend to over look most days.

Day 1: I'm thankful that the kids were able to trick or treat and have great weather to do it in. Because October 31st had some crazy wind and rain, our community postponed the trick or treating to Friday night, November 1st. We spent the evening at my mom's, roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over the fire pit, taking the girls around for candy, and meeting some of her neighbors.

Day 2: I love watching the kids play in their sports. This fall, JD played baseball and Louba played softball (Jules played on the playset or wall ball during their games). My kiddos love sports, and for that I'm thankful. But, I'm also thankful that this was our last game day until spring! It wears a momma out going from one field to the other across town. I'm thankful for the wonderful friends we've made through the kids sports.

Day 3: Today is Orphan Sunday. A day I really didn't know existed until the year before we adopted Louba. I didn't know this was the journey I would take. It's been a long, hard, emotional roller coaster. I know it will continue to be. Adoption is HARD. But, the journey is worth every tear. Louba is an orphan no more. She has a mom and dad and brother and sister and a huge extended family who love her to pieces. I love telling our story. I'm thankful for the friends who told me the good and the bad about adoption. I'm thankful for the friends who let me cry and scream and complain that the process was not fair, that this little girl should not be without a family. I'm thankful for the friends who listen to me today talk about how sassy Louba is and how she is our "LAST ONE!" I'm thankful for a little girl, who lived for three and half years without a mom and day, but loves me as her mom.
I'm not a doctor or a dietician, so take my advice for what it's worth.

I've had a physical in the last few months, and while I'm not dying, I'm not living to the fullest either. The doctor put me on a low dose water pill to help with some blood pressure issues I've been having for the past couple of years that we feel is stress related (our adoption, plus all the test/evaluation demands of being a teacher). I used AdvoCare products in 2010 and loved the results I had (20 pounds and about 20 inches lost) in the 24 day challenge. Over the years, I've sporatically used the products, but I haven't been consistant to say the least. But, I've kept the weight and inches off!!! We used AdvoCare to fund some of our adoption too (see the link on the sidebar for our store). But, after the blood work in November and then another test just this week, I knew I needed to do more to get those pesky numbers where they needed to be.

I LOVE to eat. I HATE to exercise. But, I want to be around to see my kids grow up without having a stroke or heart attack. When I used AdvoCare consistently in 2010, I had some great blood work numbers, and I hope that the products, along with a better diet and exercise plan helped.

I've recently started back at the gym a couple days a week, and now it's time to adjust what I'm eating and the products I'm using.

Here's what I'm starting on Monday, and the meals I'll be preparing. I'll try to link to the recipes I'll use as well.
We've had Louba in our arms for one, whole year. It was about this time, a year ago, we were sitting in a hotel in Vladimir, Russia getting ready to make the hour drive to the orphanage in Gus-Khrustalny. We would see her care givers for the last time. See the only home she knew for three and a half years (1279 days, 110,505,600 seconds, 1,841,760 minutes, 30,696 hours, or 182 weeks). Many of you have followed our journey here, on Facebook and Instagram, or in "real" life. We're so lucky to have our village helping make sure the next years of our journey go as well as this year has.

This past weekend I had the priviledge of attending the Empowered to Connect conference in Nashville. I thought I was going to an adoption conference, but it was so much more. I had read Dr. Karyn Purvis' book The Connected Child before we brough Louba home, and had flipped through it since trying to find ways to better connect and discipline her. I'll be honest, I HATED Dr. Purvis before we adopted. I didn't think she knew what she was talking about. I had two kids already that were fine. Why do I need to read how to raise another? But, after attending the conference, I really think she needs to come live with me for a few days and help me to better understand how to make these connections and help our family understand Louba's past. This woman is AMAZING!!!

I've always thought that we've had a great connection and attachement with Louba, and after the conference, I still know we do. We're not on the severe end of the spectrum of attachment disorder (or sensory disorder), just somewhere in the middle. Louba spent over three years in an orphanage. an orphanage with staff who I believe loved her and nurtured her as best as they could. But it still wasn't a mom and dad to hold her when she cried or give her things when she wants. Or, just making sure she knows she is "precious" like all children should feel. Seeing the videos from the conference, and hearing the stories from Dr. Purvis and the Monroe's, I heard Louba's story. I heard the neglect that she had to endure for those three plus years. I heard the cries that went unanswered when she was a baby. I heard the stories of the horror she must have faced when children would die in front of her. Things I know she will NEVER forget.
I sat in tears most of the weekend thinking about what my baby had to live through for three long years. But, also knowing that this is a new life for her. A life that I hope to make as enjoyable as possible. Michael Monroe, one of the speakers at the conference was such an inspiration, along with his wife Amy. (They are involved with Tapestry Ministry). One thing he said was "this is the beginning of your journey." No matter how long we have been home as parents, we can't go back, but we can sure go forward with healing and help. I really liked this couple. They gave a no nonsense view into their lives--the good, the bad, and the sometimes ugly. They admitted to mess ups and that sometimes they give the sermons for misbehavior, sometimes the steps don't work the way you want them to, but we should keep on keeping on.
I only thought our journey had begun almost two years ago. Today it's beginning again. These strategies are not easy. I was emotionally drained this weekend from listening to these stories to trying not to get frustrated when trying them on all three of our kids. I tried really hard not to yell, not to put in time out, but to disfuse the situation or to help them make better choices. I have to keep reminding myself that it took her almost four years to learn these survival strategies, she's not going to "unlearn" them overnight.

I took pages and pages of notes. Here are some snippets from them.

From the Monroe sessions:

know your buttons and how to deal with them.

It's not about you, it's about healing for them

Pay attention to your past to make your child's (or children's) life better.

You can't implement the strategies if you can't make sense of your past

Learn who your children are and where they come from. They are not "mini-mes"

Be FULLY EMOTIONALLY PRESENT

Try YESES instead of always saying no. Think about why you are saying no in the first place.

"Today is the first day of the rest of your journey"

Unlearn what we've been doing and do it the right way

experience helps

help family, friends, others understand

Take it one day/month/year at a time

From the Purvis sessions:

Give them permission to negotiate

Our journey is "in-process" not to fix them or us

Help them to self regulate ("magic mustache," chair push ups, wall pushes)

Model honesty

1 in 20 kids have sensory processing disorder

keep a sensory journal

the most violent kids are usually the most tender-hearted

They are surviors

Give them a VOICE

Touch, eye contact, protective, and soft voice

Have shared power

If you discipline with force, you will get force in return

Immediate positive reinforcement is needed within 3 seconds

Tiers: Playful Engagement, Structual Engagement, Calming Engagement, Protective Engagement

Put the bar where they can succeed! Don't raise too fast or too slow.

If you up the structure, you must up the nurture

When it's over it's over; don't dwell

redirect the behavior, not escalate it

Use their VOICE

40-60% of kids in international orphanges do not survive because of lack of contact

Use a warm tone when you talk

One-on-one time is a must

If you are adopting, have adopted, know someone who is...If you have kids regardless of if they are biological or adopted, you have to read this book and try to attend the conference or even listen to or watch the videos of the conference. It will change the way you deal with behavior issues of all children.
A couple weeks ago, I was able to sit down to some one on one time with the kiddos and get some answers.
First up, Julianne:
Judy is now a grandmother, although she isn't old enough to be. One of my memories of working in the English Dept. was our "gatherings" with all the professors and work study students. Judy made this amazing Chicken Salad and shared her recipe with me. I hope she doesn't mind me sharing it here.

This recipe makes a huge portion. I usually half it for our family (or just me since I'm the only one who eats it).
2 1/2 cups cooked chicken (2-3 cans)
3/4 c. white grapes
2Tbsp. chopped parsley
1 C chopped celery
1/2 C pecans or almonds
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup Mayo
1/2 C cool whip

Mix and chill!! How easy is that. I like to serve mine with sweet Hawaiian bread or pita bread (croissants are yummy too).

We've been on a travel team since he was 6 or 7. We love our team, but we play a bunch of games (almost 60 this season alone). Our team is more than just a team, it's a family. We get to experience life with these folks. They know some of our deepest secrets, they are part of our happiest memories, and some of our saddest personal times. I don't know what I would do if we didn't have these families in our lives. Here are some of his latest (i.e. coolest) shots from this seasons.
Louba's is at the end of May, Jules is just a couple weeks later in mid June, and JD has a birthday at the beginning of July. (Emma, my niece's birthday is just a week before Julianne's). We didn't have parties this year because we have been spending so much time at the ballpark with JD's travel team. We had some small family gatherings and the kids got to choose where they wanted to eat. For Louba, she wanted pizza and slip and slide; Jules wanted Mexican; JD wanted Buffalo Wild Wings. And, of course, I made cakes that they picked out. Louba wanted a barbie cake with a pink dress, Jules had a beach themed cake with candy shells, and JD wanted homemade oatmeal cream pies. We didn't go overboard with gifts either. The each received a new bike from us, and a few small things or money from everyone else. All-in-all, I think they still had a good birthday.
I have to go back to work a couple days this week, and the big kids are spending those two days with Mom and Dad. These past few weeks have been so busy (more on that later).

Here's our annual first day of school picture of Lou (I'll post the others here in a couple weeks when they start). Louba will be in the pre-K class at her daycare, Jules will be a 2nd grader, and JD will be in the 4th. It's hard to believe I have one that's only two years away from middle school.
Louba loved school today. She was a little apprehensive about going into a new classroom, but went in and did great. Her teacher is the same one JD and Jules both had when they went to the pre-school she's at. She'll have to sign her name in every morning from now on. She told me she learned stuff but didn't know what she learned. She did say she got to play outside which is HUGE for her. (Hopefully, one day we'll have those bangs grown out and loose the 80s ponytail hair-do.)

When we found Louba and knew her know diagnosis was achondroplasia, we expected some doctors visits. We have been blessed beyond our wildest dreams with her health. We knew achondroplasia could lead to spinal compression issues, bowed legs, spinal kyphosis (which is a spinal curve), among other things. I'm one of those who really trust my doctors. I can research all day long, but they have spent years in medical school. My thought is, I don't like non-teachers telling me how to teach, I shouldn't tell doctors how to treat. Yes, I do ask questions and voice my concerns, but ultimately, I trust my doctors.

We have been to a geneticist (Dr. John Phillips) at Vanderbilt who said she's perfect. He still wants to see her in six months (or October now) to discuss the BioMarin study in more depth. We're still not sure what our role will be in the study, but know we want to be part of it to help other children born with achondroplasia overcome some of the medical issue associated with this genetic disorder. He took spinal and hand x-rays and said everything looked exactly how it was supposed too. He did some neurological assessments and said she did everything the way she needed too.

We've recently seen an ENT and today her orthopedic doctors. The ENT (Dr. Wanna) said her hearing was perfect too (she has slight loss at extremely high frequency). He also doesn't need to see her again, but recommend her hearing be tested by our pediatrician in a year.

Today's visit was to the orthopedic doctor at Vanderbilt (Dr. Green). I LOVE HIM!!! He made the kids feel so at easy and joked around with them the whole time we were there. He showed me the x-rays from our April visit and said, "She's perfect! I don't think I'll be seeing her again." Her spine has NO curve, her legs are not bowed (for an achon), her back is the exact shape it should be for achon.

So, we've paid money for doctors to tell us what we already knew, she's PERFECT!!! Our God is so good! We head to the dentist, eye doctor, and regular pediatrician in the next couple of weeks before school starts back. Our girl is a smart one too. I'm glad we stepped out of our comfort zone and brought this one into our lives. I can't imagine living this life without this fireball.
If you are considering adoption, consider a waiting child. Talk to adoptive parents who have adopted from waiting child lists (the Browns, the Hoods, the Overstreet, anyone on Reece's Rainbow website--these are just a few of the families we know who have adopted from the waiting child lists from various countries). Special needs doesn't always mean lifetimes in hospitals or doctor's offices. SN kids are just kids who need families to love and nurture them to their fullest potential.
But, we went into adoption not looking for a baby. We wanted a toddler. I've thought about those firsts many times over the past few months that she's been home. I don't know what she was like the day she was born. I don't know how she felt when she heard her Russia mommy's voice for the first time out of the womb. I realized I've missed three and half years of first with her. I thought about it again today when we drove by the hospital John David was born in. I don't know what her hospital looks like.

What I do know, is I get to experience years of firsts with her. I got to see her first steps on American soil. I got to hear her first English words. I got to see her go to her first day of preschool, her first night with her forever family. I get to experience with her her first crush, her first kiss, her first broken heart, her first A on a test she studies all night for, and many, many more firsts that her Russia mommy doesn't get to see.

Am I sad that I'm not part of those firsts firsts? A little. But I'm so excited about what the next years hold for her and our family.
We used paper and stickers, we used an on-line chart, we found an app for the iPad. But nothing seems to work. It's partly our faults. We don't in force them to do it. Since it's summer, I thought I'd try another one. I search pinterest for different ideas, but none were exactly what I wanted. I combined several different versions for one that I hope will work for my bunch. Louba doesn't have one yet. She is the bi kid's helper and gets to use the new zebra dust mop, which is fine for her.
Jule's was needed a new overnight duffle, and I just couldn't find one I loved for the price I wanted to pay. The ladies at the shop ALWAYS do a great job helping find the perfect fabric and help so much with teaching you tricks and tips to make a difficult job easier. Jules picked out the fabric a few weeks ago, some pre-quilted floral fabric (which made putting the bag together much easier), and today, we constructed it in the class.
Mary, at the shop, came up with the pattern. It's pretty easy, pockets on each side, and zipper closure. If you want to learn how to sew, or sew better, Stitcher's is the place to visit.

We're finalizing our taxes, or the request for more information part. We kept all the receipts from travel and adoption expenses, but not in a neat and organized way. This part would have been so much easier if I hadn't had to deal with this:

This is the folder I kept everything adoption related in, and I've still lost things. If I were to do it all again, which we may one day, I would start a spread sheet and number each receipt, each dollar I spent on ANYTHING adoption related. I'd organize it by date, and then by what the receipt was for. I'd put it all in a nice binder with clear pockets for each month. And, when in country, I'd write on the receipt or on a sheet attached to the receipt what it is and what it is for. I've translated several receipts today only to still not know what it is. I could kick myself for not being organized this past year. But, when you're throw twelve receipts in Russian, are jet-lagged, and missing your family, the last thing you want to do is work on a spreadsheet and get organized.

Hope this helps...
I've used on-line programs, I've created my own templates, I tried using those little bitty teacher planner books (once, like for a week). Last year, I did a combination of my own template and the school's student agenda. It worked, but not as well as I wanted. I use www.cozi.com for our family life and any big school holidays or events. But, I've been scouring Pinterest and the internet for a planner that I could customize to fit my schedule, and I think I've finally found one!!!

Jenny at Lucky Frog's Lilypad created this one for her blog. It was what I was looking for (with a little modifying). I added a cover page, changed the class periods since I teach a split block schedule, and have a pretty set schedule with planning and remediation classes. Here's my version that you can edit as well (Jenny has the original). I made it fit our nine week schedule, and will print every nine weeks front/back to save copies and have it so I can see a whole week at a time when it's printed. I had put a cute font on it, but it switched when I put it on here--but it's editable. I found the owl clip are here.

This will be part of my teacher binder that I'll start this fall. I've had a teacher binder in the past, but I want one that looks better and is easier to use than before. The following is what I plan on putting in the binder:
1. Lesson plans (see above)
2. Book and locker list (coming soon)
3. Attendance (we take attendance online, but I print it out each month)
4. discipline log
5. Parent contact list
6. Remediation list
7. Grade book
8. Standards (SPi's and Common Core checklists)

Now to find the perfect binder!
We spent the next couple of days learning about each other. She was funny and loving, (and still is).

Today, we're at home six months with a sweet little girl who has stolen our hearts. She's even more enjoyable and now speaks with a southern accent with a faint Russian accent added in. She still remembers a few words in Russian, but talks non-stop in English. She loves to paint, color, and cut with scissors. She enjoyed Vacation Bible School for the first time ever and wants to go back. She wants to play baseball or softball like her brother and sister. She eats chicken nuggets, french fries, chips, lasagna, milk, cheerios, donuts, and ice cream. We still fight the eating issues and there's not a great variety there. But, she has gained about 3 pounds since coming home. She loves swinging outside and riding her bike.
It took about an hour to make, but it's worth it. First, I popped the popcorn and then spread it out on foil lined pans. Next, I mixed up all the ingredients from the website. I only let it boil for about 3 minutes instead of the 5 recommended. Followed the rest of the directions by stirring it every 15 minutes for an hour. Let it cool (or eat it off the spatula). OH. MY. WORD. It is even better than I thought it was going to be. Just look at that gooey goodness.

We've started making out "bucket" list, and I'm sure we won't get to half of them, but here's some of our list of possibilities.
1. Visit the zoo. We purchased a membership to Boonshoft Museum to use this summer at area places including the zoo. It's $5.00 to park, and we'll take a sack lunch to enjoy at the picnic tables.
2. Visit the Science Center. Science in Toys opens June 16th.
3. Go to the Discovery Center.
4. Splash at the Splash Pad and have a picnic supper with Dad.
5. Paint some pottery ($3.00 per painter on certain days, plus the pottery--my kids have a $5.00 a piece limit when we go)
6. Go bowling!! Kids bowl for free at several area bowling centers. All we'll pay is shoe rental!
7. Visit the Farmer's Market (or several) in our area.
8. Play in the sprinklers in our yard
9. feed the ducks at Centennial Park. See the Parthenon from the outside (they love the Percy Jackson movie)
10. Go to the cheap summer movies here and here.
11. Go to VBS at our church. The kids LOVE this (and it's FREE).
12. Go to Beechbend Park or Nashville Shores. so it's not free, but it's a fun special treat get-away close to home.
13. Ride the Go Carts and play Putt-putt here.
14. Go to the library for story time and to read.
15. Make stuff!
16. Learn about something new--a place we want to visit, an animal, a foreign country, a new food.
17. Watch a movie at home when it's too hot or too rainy to get outside.
18. splash in the puddles around our house during a rain shower.
19. Visit dad at work and have lunch
20. have a yard sale.

TALK! she is a talker and will talk with anyone who will stop and listen. Right now, she's speaking in 6-7 word sentences. I can understand most of what she says. She gets frustrated when you can't understand her.

Her favorite things to say/ask: "Whatcha doing?" "Where you goin?" "I like your fingernails" (but only if they are polished. She does not like a french manicure). "Go fast momma!" She does not like to stop when we are in the car.

PRAYERS. She says her daycare lunchtime prayer at dinner every night, and "now I lay me" at bed time. Most of the time it's in a whisper.

Her TRIKE. She loves riding her tricycle outside or in the house. The Easter bunny even brought her a kitty helmet to wear.

BUBBLES. she likes to blow them, pour them out, play in them.

EAT. She's finally trying new things thanks to daycare. She'll eat chicken nuggets now, green peas, fish sticks, spaghetti, french fries, chicken tacos, chips, salsa, bananas and peanut butter, pbandj sandwiches, and loves milk and water. She's even gained a couple pounds since January.

CLOTHES. she wants to wear dresses ALL.THE.TIME. if we go shopping, we have to look at shoes.

Books I've read over the last six months to a year:
Hunger Games trilogy--who hasn't? I love this trilogy. The kids love this. JD has seen the movie and is listening to the second book.

Matched and Crossed dystopian society. Boys and girls are matched to their "perfect" mate the year they turn 16. They are also given a "last supper" on their 80th birthday to control the population for optimal living.

Divergent A close second to the Hunger Games. Love this book and can't wait to read the second, Insurgent. Tris must choose her new adult life after she finds out secretly she is a divergent.
Not for pity from anyone, and not that I am angry at anything or anyone. But why did God choose me to parent three of the most precious children in the world? I am not the kindest, gentlest, or even most compassionate person. I am selfish, needy, and like to be left alone. But He gave me three of the most amazing things in the world.

My first born. My all-star. My sweet little man. I love this kid. I love his kind heart, his dirty knees, and the way he holds his sister's hand when she is scared. I love how he gives everything 110%, no matter what it is. I love that he still holds my hand and gives me kisses. He is a helper. He wants to help others. He is learning to serve alongside his daddy at church and that just makes me smile.

1 Corinthians 15:58

So, my dear brothers and sisters, stand strong. Don't let anything change you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord. You know that your work in the Lord is never wasted.

My princess. My dancer. My softball sweetheart. She is FULL of personality. I see so much of me in her and it scares me. She has the most beautiful blue eyes. I love how she tries new things. I love how she makes up songs and belts them so loud. I love that she tries to teach her little sister how to pose for pictures or what she should wear. She is growing up way too fast (and frustrates me beyond belief). She is growing in God and I see how he is truly working on her heart to lead her to Him.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

My Russian. My unexpected surprise. My smile in the morning. This girl is amazing. She surprises me everyday with the new things she's learned. In four short months, she has learned English, gone to school, and left everything she ever knew to join our family in the US. She loves. She loves to get attention by asking everyone she sees, "What's your name?" or "Whacha doing?" or "Where you goin?" She loves to give me hugs and kisses even when I don't ask for them. She loves her bubba and sissy. I am excited to see what God does with this little one. I know she is going to move mountains with her personality and like-ability.
I am blessed to be the mom of three beautiful children. I am still in awe that my God has given me this amazing gift, one that I am so not deserving of.
I go back to work on Friday, and this was what we decided to do. She's used to being around lots of kids (hello, she grew up in an orphanage). We were a little nervous that she would think we were "taking her back" to the orphanage, because the school is very institutional looking when you first walk in. We visited the school a couple of times to get her used to walking in the door and realizing that we weren't going to leave here there. We've talked about her going to school for a while now. We've really built it up, in hopes that it would get her excited about school. When we turned onto the road that the school is on, she ask, "Are we going to Louba's school."

"YEEESSSS!!!" fist pump from the back seat. I think she was pretty excited (she told Eric she was cited last night about school).

I picked her up after lunch today to ease her into going and being away from mom. She even ate while there (two servings of cereal for snack, and two servings of peas for lunch). When I walked in, she finally saw me and I got the biggest smile. She immediately began telling me that she got to use scissors today. Before we even got out of the door she said she wanted to go back tomorrow. We may try nap time at school tomorrow.
